Together, we can get through it – Monica

My love of poetry

As you may already know, I have always enjoyed writing poetry. I thought I would share a piece that I wrote for the school board’s “Fledglings” publication. Can you believe I wrote this when I was 14 years old? When I re-read it, I tear up.

My piece is about friendship, depression and awareness.

Mental Health Awareness

Mental health is a such a huge issue and people with mental health issues are often stigmatized because of their condition. The thing is, at some point in life, we probably all experience things like depression, feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, etc. I personally have gone through phases of depression in my life – but lucky to talk it out with supportive friends and family.

We may be open and talk about how we are feeling, or maybe keep it to ourselves (not recommended). With respect to others, we have no idea what people are battling with in their personal lives. I suspect that many people don’t even realize that they have an issue (why they can’t focus or function, feel sad all the time, etc.), or if they are aware don’t realize that they can reach out to a trusted friend or seek professional help.

Matthew Good, Canadian songwriter and singer, one of my FAV artists, battles with depression. See link below for one article about him:

Resources

If you or someone needs help, please reach out. You are not alone. The sooner you get help the better.

Here are a couple of resources online for a place to start:

Well, without further ado – here is my poem…

Together ‘Til the End

The times we shared,
During the timed days of summer.
Together,
I thought we'd always be.

The secrets we shared,
During the short days of our youth.
Together,
Our friendship was true.

The things we shared,
During the short days of school.
Together,
I felt we'd never be apart.

The difficulties we shared,
During the long, hard times of our lives.
Together,
I felt that we were much like sisters.

The confusion in your life,
Never mattered more.
You felt a need to end all the suffering,
You saw no way out.
Alone.

The dreams we shared,
During the course of our lives,
I fulfilled,
Unfortunately you didn't.

The life I now lead,
Is much different.
The memory of you I share,
Over and over and over again.

Hoping others will learn.
Together,
A community
